History

Most of Laelia's past before her life of servitude and later fame is unknown. What is known is that she was born to a proud Miqo'te couple as a second child, but lost them while still young to war. Her parents were killed during a battle that spilled into the streets of their hometown when she was about 5 or 6.Like the other orphaned children in the area, Laelia and her brother (Fiore) were taken, separated, and sold to different houses as servants. She worked for a few years, but her clumsy nature often got her into trouble. The initial house she was sold to found her to be useless and not worth the trouble. As a result, she was sold to the next house; this happened a few times before a man, a Hyur, named Loren Waller bought her. Loren had FULL intentions of whoring her out and turning her into his prostitute so he could sell her to the richer folks. He wanted to get into their good graces or even have her learn dirty secrets to use against them. He had even considered starting a brothel with her as his first worker. Laelia had no idea this was his intention with her at all. She thought she was to do house work, which is what she was always doing in his home. At this point he'd yet to be truly mean to her. He caught her singing and dancing in his garden when she thought he was gone for the day and realized she had some raw talent. That's when he decided that he'd use Laelia to rise to fame instead. He got her some dancing and vocal lessons to improve her skill. He forced her to practice at all hours, even when she was tired and sore. He'd make her start over whenever there was a mistake. He soon had her performing in the streets, the lower quarters of cities, and towns for money while pretending to be her manager. If she'd mess up or even was off a tad and no one noticed, he did. He would berate and yell at her in private. She was popular among the poor for quite some time before she gained any traction and attention from the rich.As word spread of Laelia, the more popular she got and soon enough nobles and other higher ups would request/hire her for performances. This lined Lorens pockets and he loved it; he wanted more. Once she appeared old enough, he took on the role of her lover to deter any suitors. To the public, he was a loving and doting manager/boyfriend; but in private he was abusive and cruel. Any little mishap or mistake in her performance would set him off. The more popularity she gained, the worse his abuse became. He never physically hit her as he didn't want to leave any bruises or marks. After all, she was his prized possession. How could she perform if she was bruised? He would torment her instead. Anything she held dear or any clothes she liked, he'd break and destroy them in front of her. He'd yell at her, pull on her ears and tail (which is why she hates when they're touched now and this was the furthest his physical abuse went), call her names, make her think she was worthless, etc. He’d get angrier if she cried. He’d often throw things or hit the wall by her head to scare her. One of his favorite comments when doing so was “This is what I want to do to you, but I’m good so I don’t.”.Then he'd buy her clothes and jewelry and force her to wear them even when she tried to decline. Eventually she would just do it because she'd incur some wrath if she didn't. And then he'd say things like "See? You're so lucky and spoiled. What slave gets jewels and pretty dresses? What slave owns stuff like this?"Loren also constantly wanted "private" dances often and during one of those, he forced himself on her and left her a sobbing mess on the floor over her own torn clothes. He said "clean yourself up, you have a show tonight" as he dressed himself. He had her on a super strict exercise and practice regime. He restricted what she ate, so she never had sweets or alcohol before.Basically any verbal or mental or emotional torture he could come up with, he'd do it. Laelia lived in terror. She developed her reserved and stoic side/mask she uses in public. She tried to run away once and after he caught her, he broke something a fan had given her in front of her eyes. Aki actually was witness to it. When Loren thought they were alone he berated her for missing a step in her routine and tugged on her ear. Aki was actually nearby but didn't do anything at the time. He went on with his business, but would meet Laelia and Loren again once Loren was drafted into the same war he was. Laelia thought she would finally be free, but she was sorely mistaken when he dragged her along. He made her perform for the soldiers in between battles/at camp to keep up morale (and to secure some popularity himself). He would go as far as to drag her into battle so she was never away from him, forcing her to act as his back up. Loren constantly tried to get Aki killed or even marked as a traitor.During one particular battle, Loren had gotten cocky while Laelia hid nearby. He'd gotten himself surrounded and demanded her help. He begged for her help and she hesitated. She took a step forward, almost ready to help him and join in and sacrifice her life too... but Aki grabs her by the wrist and pulls her away. They forsake him and Loren dies.(In another version of her where she never meets Aki, she forsakes him herself).Back at camp, Aki tells Laelia that it's her life to protect now. She can do whatever she wants, but she's going to have to learn how to take care of herself. She thanks him, but she finds herself going back to him later that night. She's lost: she's never been on her own and cries. All she's known is a life of servitude and Loren's abuse. Aki vows to protect her and help her learn to take care of herself (almost a mentor role). Even after Laelia becomes a WOL and can travel on her own, she spends a good deal of time following Aki as she discovers herself.Currently, she doesn't remember her actual birthplace or day or even her birth name.[More to come]

Personality

Laelia is known for her gentle, quiet, polite, and soft spoken traits. Due to her time with with Loren and her other owners, she had adapted a stoic and reserved persona. She hardly shows her emotions too openly, keeping her calm and apathetic composure in a lot of situations. In truth, she is compassionate, understanding, and empathetic, often showing sympathy toward everyone (even when it doesn't always show on her face). She almost never hesitates to help others due to her caring heart. After she ventures out on her own (and becomes the WOL), she begins to open up to the world around her and learns to think for herself; she becomes more driven as a result. She is loyal, but also naive to a point that she tends to put others before herself. When it comes to those she gets close to, her joyful, positive, and passionate side emerge. They also get to see her feisty, opinionated, and even slightly stubborn traits. Laelia loves nature and would rather spend her time in it than in a city or town. Deep down, she feels guilty for leaving Loren to his death. She hides her trauma of the time with him and keeps it to herself.

Relationships

Aki Faelen

Aki is a warrior that Laelia meet during the war. The two didn't officially meet or speak until she had wandered away from Loren for a small break. She'd been talking to herself when he'd made himself known. She begged him not to tell Loren and he simply waved it off. He could see Loren what he truly was under the act and all the abuse Laelia was enduring. He left her alone after and Loren demanded she stay away from him. When her master had bit off more than he could chew in battle he screamed for her help.
Unable to resist the conditioning to go to him, she moved to sacrifice herself for him. Aki appeared and held her back as the final blows were delivered. He allowed Loren to die, effectively freeing her. That night, Laelia went to him and cried. She had no where to go, not many skills to take care of herself, and no direction in life. Aki allowed her to stay with him, taking on a mentor type role. He taught her many skills she would need to take care of herself. He even taught her how to read and write. She wouldn't allow him to become her sole salvation--she didn't want to rely on someone to take care of her ever again. Yet, she always returned to his side. She left less and less until she eventually realized she needed to be near him. Laelia fell in love with him, often yearning for him. She had trouble with her feelings; not sure if they were because he saved her life or because she came to know him. Aki, at first, pretended not to notice them. Eventually, their relationship turned into love.Laelia's canonical lover

G'raha Tia

G'raha had heard many stories of Laelia before he met her. The tales went from her "humble" beginnings as a dancer and songstress to heroic deeds as the WOL. Those stories are what caught his interest. When he did finally get to meet her, he realized he'd put her on a pedestal; she was not this perfect hero he'd envisioned. He kept a slight distance due to her reserved and stoic mask at first. Soon, he came to notice a hidden strength and kindness behind her. She was still healing and coming into herself; learning who she was. It was with that realization that G'raha knew he wanted to help her figure out who she was. He taught her how to read, write, and among other skills she'd never learned growing up. Laelia started to learn how to identify and manage her emotions due to his influence. He became the first person she truly started to open up to. She shared some of her past, but quickly shut that down; she hadn't been ready to share it all yet. That didn't stop him as they had developed feelings for each other. When G'raha decided to seal himself away, he apologized for it and kissed her on the cheek. Laelia fell back into hiding behind her mask. She didn't react; she didn't say good bye; she simple turned on her heel and left. Her apathetic reaction hurt them both as she later grew to regret it. G'raha believed she didn't care and Laelia carried that guilt with her until they were reunited. Despite being impressed by her growth and openness, the two are still taking things slow to truly get to know each other.Laelia's AU/WOLship/Non-Canon lover

Fiore Vi'brunnel

Laelia's older brother. The two did not grow up together as they were separated and sold to different houses after their parents were killed. Fiore managed to get away
and spent years searching for her. The two were reunited due to a mutual friend. By chance, the two had decided to visit said friend on the same day. He recognized her immediately (Laelia looks just like their mother), but she didn't recognize him. Instead, she fled and he gave chase. After multiple attempts to get her to speak to him, he was able to prove they were related. He showed her a red panda stuffed animal that was hers. It was worn in places, but she had memories of the toy. He displays the typical over protective big brother attitude towards her and it drives her insane. The two are still building a relationship and making up for lost time, but he has proven that he loves his little sister. Laelia is currently learning how to be a GNB from him.

Kai V'cero

(image: kissstealKai)
Laelia thinks of Kai as one of her good, but few friends. He is one of those able to make her laugh, smile, and even blush. He has seen all sides to her, from her public reserved persona to her feisty and stubborn side she keeps hidden. Kai is even the mutual friend that led her to being reunited with her brother, Fiore. They had passed each other in their lives a few times before, but never truly spoken until Ishgard sent in troops to help the Alliance and Resistance against the empire. The first was during the praetorium inflitration, where aside from names, Laelia had kept to herself. The second was her final performance that led her to Ishgard, where Kai was in the audience.
By the third encounter, Kai had recognized her from the inflitration and struck up a conversation (he had not recognized her as the Songstress he'd seen before). Laelia, now more open to others, was pleased to speak with him. It was then it was revealed she was the WOL, which left Kai in awe. Laelia was left a bit confused, as she wasn't sure how to handle his reaction to her status. From there, their friendship was born and Laelia would visit Ishgard any chance she got to see her friend. Kai just being himself and appreciating her art during her visits was enough to get her on the path to performing again.

Rayha’to Kazzak

Laelia's friendship with Rayha'to is a mystery. They don't often mention their friendship to others, but she speaks very fondly of him when she does. She was introduced to Ray by Fiore, who promptly tried to hook the two together up. And continues to despite the fact they are both taken to ruffle their feathers. They share a mutual love of music and dance. She never hesitates to invite him to her stage if she notices him in the crowd, often leading to a certain duet song. She finds him to be incredibly sweet and polite. It often leaves her wondering what he's doing being friends with Fiore.
